Ely is putting in 6 new courts above Semers park
Article from the Ely Echo
Pickleball enthusiasts will soon have another location to play their favorite game.
The city of Ely is developing a pickleball area near Semer’s Park, just above the parking area.
Upon recommendation of the city’s parks and recreation board, council members voted Tuesday to proceed with the first phase of the project, which includes minor tree clearing and road construction to the courts.
“What we’re looking at is grubbing that roadway and the parking area,” said clerk-treasurer and operations director Harold Langowski.
As council members discussed what financial impacts, if any, there would be to the city, member John Lahtonen sought some clarification.
“What you’re saying is this is in-kind services to be provided by the city,” said Lahtonen.
Langowski concurred. “Other than this in-kind labor and in-kind materials, this will be covered by the pickleball club or other funding sources that they’re going after,” said Langowski. “They are fundraising and do have money for the development of the site.”
Drawings included in Tuesday’s meeting packet show a fenced-in area of 132by-120 feet, with six separate pickleball courts.
The Ely Pickleball Club receives $50,000 grant from IRRRB to put towards new courts.

$500 was donated from the Ely Pickleball Club, which will go towards scholarships for deserving new or returning Minnesota North - Vermilion Student. Preference is given to students from Ely or Northeast Range (Babbitt/Tower) High School. Students must also show financial need, be in good academic standing, and working to their potential.

Interested in learning more about this fast growing game? Come and try it out. We have a great group of players who are having a lot of fun while getting some great exercise. In the Summer we play at the Memorial Courts next to the football field. In the Winter, play is moved indoors to the Vermilion Community College Gymnasium.
The game is easy to learn, and quickly develops into a fast pace competition. We frequently get players from out of town dropping in to join us for play.
