As a part of your membership benefits, we're sunsetting all UTPR ratings—the old USA Pickleball Tournament Player Ratings—and introducing the UTR-P, an official rating of USA Pickleball!
.
1.) Please be sure to read your e-mails from the Pickleboard Board so that you are aware of any rule changes, play times, etc.
2.) Also, please read the Board Meeting Minutes once they are published which typically is a few days after our meetings. Nancy will let you know when they are posted and send a link. This is a good way for you to know what is going on with your club.
3.) Cathy Bell has recently obtained the 501 3(c) designation for our club. This is no easy task. She was diligent in her quest to get this done. I don’t know about you, but making phone calls, getting put on hold multiple times, being rerouted and then hitting dead end after dead end is not my idea of a god time. We’re really fortunate that she was willing and capable to take on this task. Please thank Cathy for her persistence and hard work.
4.) If we play in the college on days of inclement weather, we must remove the tape and take down the nets EVERY time unless you hear differently from a board member.
5.) Through May 30, we CANNOT start play earlier than 9:00. This is a security/safety issue for the school. They do not want any adults, other than school personnel, on the school grounds until 9:00.
6.) Remember that we are going to the Even/Odd day formats starting June 1.
7.) We would encourage Ely Pickleball Club players to attend the next Parks and Rec meeting on May 20, at 5:00 at Whiteside Park. If it is raining, I believe it will be at City Hall. This is our opportunity to voice our needs for both indoor and outdoor pickleball facilities.
8.) Next week, weather permitting, we will be painting the pickleball lines at the ERC location (inside the skating rink). This court will be available to anyone including children, club members, Ely visitors, etc. As you know, we are utilizing the school courts M-F mornings and this will provide another place for others to play during that time. We would like to also donate paddles. If you have paddles that you would like to donate, please tag and place in the cabinet or give to a board member. We are also donating a portable net.
9.) We are encouraging players to wear eye protection while playing. We hear more and more about significant eye injuries that could be avoided with eye protection. Craig has purchased a couple dozen pairs of safety glasses that will be in the cabinet. If you come to pickleball without a form of eye protection (sunglasses, prescription glasses, etc.), please feel free to take a pair for your use.
.
The club has formed a committee to research how new courts could be built either on the same site or somewhere else within Ely. The club is excepting donations that are tax deductible. The club is a 501 (C) (3)
The results of the survey to change the play for the summer, as follows, approved the change with 41 “Yay” votes and 5 “Nay” votes.
This change will take place May 31. The last day of school classes is May 30. So to recap: Even days will be all levels playing together (we will use the winner, challenger boxes) and odd days will be level play. As communicated last year and noted on the website, it is up to the player to self designate level play. The Ely Pickleball Club website also defines the skills necessary for each of the levels. In the event there are not enough players in one of the levels, those players can recruit a player from one of the other levels. It is encouraged that both Intermediate and Advanced players rotate in with Beginners if Beginners don’t have enough players.
Chris Hartman has requested that Ely Pickleball be permitted to use the courts from 9am - 7pm on M,W,F and 3pm - 7pm on T, Th effective April 15 until the end of the school year. As soon as we get the approval, we will schedule a day to get the courts cleaned and nets set up.
If you have not already heard, our neighbors in Tower and the Vermilion area are having a fundraiser on April 20 from 6 - 9 to raise money for outdoor courts in Greenwood Township. They are very excited about this fundraiser and it would be great if we could support them. There will be free pizza, prizes, silent auction, raffle, music, fun and games.
Read the article about eye protection.

Rule 7.L has been updated and 11.A has been updated with the word “deliberately” taken out. Rule 7.L is the “Carry Rule” and 11.A is the “Double Hit” rule.
Any “Carry” is now a fault, whether it’s done on purpose or by accident, as the word “deliberate” was taken out of the rule. Now, the referee doesn’t have to decide the intent of the player’s shot. If it happens, it’s a fault. “Double hits” are still permitted as long as it happens in one, continuous motion. Rules 3.A.1 and 3.A.8 explain the differences between a “Carry” and “Double hit.”
2023
1. No more prespinning the ball when serving
2. Replay for a Violation of the Service Motion or Ball Release Rules - violation may now result in a replay. If the referee is not certain whether a serving violation occurred, then the referee may call a replay. The referee may also call an immediate fault if the referee is certain that a serving violation occurred.
3. Wrong Score called - if the server or referee calls the wrong score, then any player may stop play at any time before the return of serve to correct the score. However, if any player stops play after the return of serve (or if any player stops play and the score was actually correct), then that player would have committed a fault.
4. Clothing Color - clothing cannot match the color of the ball.
5. Equipment Time Outs will not be counted towards a time out.
